Geo-pick, compass, gore-tex and a box of chocolate muffins - let's roll...
Well, today was a walk in the park.
No, really - I spent my day walking in the park :) Times like this, I love being a geologist. I helped out with the "Melbourne: 400 Million Years in the Making" program today, taking groups of Year 10 students through Studley Park. The turnout was lower than expected, but we discovered that at least a few students were given incorrect information on where to meet us in the morning...
So, no more progress on the thesis, but I'll be working for most of the weekend to get some more work done. Next week I'll be preparing my honours presentation, which means I need to a) learn how to use Powerpoint, b) prepare some graphs and illustrations, and c) attempt to second-guess where the next fortnight of work will take the project. I have 20:20 hindsight, but precognition is much less predictable, so I'll have to see how I go.
A few nights ago, I downloaded a track on a "what the hell, I'll try this out to see what it sounds like" whim. Something reached out of my speakers to grab me by the throat, holding me there as I started to listen... I couldn't move until the song had finished. I have just discovered Laibach... it's dark enough to match the blackest mood, and puts most of my other music to shame. The first track also has a fantastic sense of building atmosphere, and an overshadowing finality about the lyrics - sci-fi dramatics, speaking the words of one who is leaving his world behind...

Laibach - B Mashina Lyrics
Only one day is left
Only one day
We are leaving the others
We're going away.
Today we all steal
animals we are
possession is lost
Our souls are from the wild
and wings to reach the sky
let the sun fall into the ocean,
let the earth erupt in flame
It is enough to have the strength and knowledge
to raise our dream machines into the sky
Let them sleep who do not know
the final day is here
the very last
and we leave at dawn
There is no force no money and no power
To stop us now and change our fate
Now every problem is destroyed
We raise our hands and bodies to the peak
Into the Universe
Towards the stars we go
Sending machines up to the sky
[Chorus]
Machines we are sending to the skies
Above us all
And leave behind those who don't know
Of the final day
We leave in sleep those who don't know
(and) we leave at dawn
We are driven by the B-machine
(Wild B-machine - that never stops)
Only one day is left
Only one day
We are leaving the others
We're going away.
Today we all steal
animals we are
possession is lost
Our souls are from the wild
and wings to reach the sky
let the sun fall into the ocean,
let the earth erupt in flame
It is enough to have the strength and knowledge
to raise our dream machines into the sky
Let them sleep who do not know
the final day is here
the very last
and we leave at dawn
There is no force no money and no power
To stop us now and change our fate
Now every problem is destroyed
We raise our hands and bodies to the peak
Into the Universe
Towards the stars we go
