We're finally back online again - though I'm currently surrounded by computers and cables, having dismantled and reassembled half the office this afternoon...
As it turned out, there was nothing wrong with our internet reconnection, modem, or any of the computers. The problem seems to be with the phone point I plugged the modem into... so I've now dragged the computer into a different room, and started getting on top of a week and a half of work emails.
Yesterday,
aeliel and I took a dozen boxes down to store in the shed. That clears a bit of room, but we still have a lot of stuff to unpack. We've passed an important milestone, transforming the house from "bomb site" to "lots of stuff lying around the place." It's a slow process, but at least we seem to be getting somewhere at last.
I've spent much of the last week trying to save desiccated trees (the newer Japanese Maples aren't coping with the heatwave), rehydrating our parched ducks, and paying lots of attention to Bethany's cat (who had concluded that all the humans had abandoned her). We moved the last carload of stuff on Wednesday night, and I've been steadily working through it ever since.
I've set up two desks in Somerville (one for painting, one for the computer), and can finally get stuck in to this month's painting. I have a computer and an internet connection, so I can eventually start doing some proper research for my PhD. I'm still missing some important things (like an RMIT student number, which would let me access the library) but they will hopefully arrive soon.
In unrelated news, I've been listening to this Portishead album non-stop for three days (couldn't get at other music while the computers were in pieces) and I still love it to bits.
