Mileage for the mind
Dec. 19th, 2003 11:46 amI love it how sometimes, songs that you forgot all about can creep up and surprise you again. I've spent the last few days unwinding (or winding up, ready to burn out all that energy) to things I've never heard before. AFX, Front Line Assembly, Rareform, Planet Kaos, Solenoid... all had their time in my speakers.
There's something comforting in settling back into songs that have stuck with you for years, though. The sound washes over you, and you can settle into it like that first night back in your own bed, after travelling.
I've shifted back from two-day-old electronic recordings, to decades-old Metallica, and it is good :)
( Here's another one, for those who like lyrics )
Still no news about work, but I'm too distant to worry about it now. Tiredness helps to further the gap between my mind and the world it observes... and I have secret weapons in the fight to become tired. The final Tai Chi class for the year ran last night, giving me another half-dozen movements to think about over Christmas. Final Wushu is on tonight, and I think I will push myself as far as I can go. For a change, I'm not going out tonight, or doing anything much over the weekend, so I'll try to find those lost reserves of energy and burn them up in a single session.
It's been a good year for training. I have 14 forms to practice, now, split between Liu He, Tai Chi, the Shaolin forms, Qi Gong, Liu He Mantis and Meihua Mantis - plus the forms from styles learnt in the past. I wanted to stretch my mind as well as my body - and it's certainly a stretch, remembering all the movements and applications.
I tend to find solace in movement - whether that happens to be practicing a form, walking for hours, or on a dancefloor. Find that space in which to think, while your mind stops to consider things.

"...and my ties are severed clean
the less I have the more I gain
off the beaten path I reign
rover wanderer
nomad vagabond
call me what you will..."

rover wanderer
nomad vagabond
call me what you will..."

"...and the earth becomes my throne
I adapt to the unknown
under wandering stars I've grown
by myself but not alone
I ask no one..."
