I'm impressed.

Somehow, despite all the non-work I've been doing this week, I've managed to get through the whole list of things that needed doing. I can't exactly say that it all went "well," but at least it went somewhere... letters are written, lab samples are processed, and I even made it to today's geochem seminar.

On the money front: I wasn't exaggerating last time - after my bills and rent, I literally have about $4 a week. Centrelink have offered me a grand total of zero options, as I (obviously) don't have time to look for extra work after putting in 50+ hours a week on my project, and another 12 hours of work + travel for CSIRO... Fortunately, I had a feeling this might happen, so I have a little bit of breathing space from my savings.

I'm finding interesting things to do at work, as I'm currently finishing off some technical documents that nobody has worked on in the past two years. Yesterday I re-wrote whole chapters in English (instead of garble-ese and dot points), and reformated things like it's going out of fashion. I have a new contender for most "interesting" addition to a file, though - a tiny (5x8cm) image, that was actually a 59cm x 45cm bitmap file (!). Amusing, but I had been wondering why my work computer was taking ten minutes to load a Word document... the document is now a shadow of its former filesize, and six pages longer.

I'm also more confident about my ability to make money from my painting. In the past, I've done small commissions purely to make some spending money - now, I'm doing it to keep a roof over my head for the next few months. I'm proud of what I can do, and I've spent the last few years building up a reputation as an insane lunatic who paints for 36 hours at a stretch. I've finished a Grey Knights dreadnaught (aimed at sale via Ebay) that's currently in the display case at Games Workshop, and I'm a few hours off completing a unit of Eldar (Striking Scorpions, for those who play 40k) for a customer in New Zealand - pictures to be taken once I get my camera back from my sister, who's on her way back from China in a little over 24 hours.

I'm painting just as fast as ever, and dramatically better than what I managed six months ago. I also have a stockpile of figures picked up through various second-hand trades, waiting for me to make time to paint them. Ebay (and money-rich, time-poor people in the US and Europe) will be buying my groceries this week, from something that I love doing - and I can't really ask for much more than that...
