It lives!

Insurgent Issue #3 is now available for download. You can find a copy here.

It has become a painting/modelling/sculpting/terrain 'zine, although this issue has a couple of pages on small games of 40k. You don't need to be registered on the WargamerAU site to download this issue - if you're interested in this subsection of geek, download a copy and let me know what you think :-)

I've temporarily given up on placing hyperlinks in InDesign, as it's sooo much easier to use the Chain Link tool in Acrobat. After a bit of swearing at the computer, the menu is now linked to each of the articles. The Back button on your browser won't navigate within a PDF, though... I'm looking at ways to make this work a bit better.

Now, off to practice my Wudan forms, and then get back to painting...

The solstice has passed, and the days are slowly getting longer. A fitting turning point perhaps - the last few weeks have slowly dragged me under them, but this is changing.

I didn't make it to work yesterday. I had plenty of overtime up my sleeve, I'd stayed late on Monday, and all my urgent tasks were finished. Instead, I stayed at home and focussed on the things that have been looming over me lately. I finished Insurgent #2, and taught myself about hyperlinking the contents page (page anchors aren't working for me... I had to use my headings as text anchors instead). If you're into miniatures games (40k in particular, but most of the articles this issue are about building terrain), please take a look... you'll need to register with http://www.wargamerau.com to download files, but that doesn't take much time to do. Issue #2 is a 1.8MB download, with 16 colour pages.

My entry for the Reaper competition is coming along nicely - I'm painting the Guardian Dragon figure (mine is purple, though...), with a display base containing some hatchlings hiding amongst the rocks. I'll put up pictures in the next week or so, as the competition closes on July 1st. I don' t know that I'll finish my entries for the other categories in time, though. All the entries will be in Mind Games by next Friday night - drop in and have a look, if you're interested.

Next Wednesday I'll be playtesting Silent Streets to run it at RetroCon on July 2-3. I'm enjoying writing it at the moment, as I finally found my angle into the final (fifth) character. The characters are mostly written up, and several background groups are already working their own plots. It looks like I'll be GMing all seven sessions across the weekend, so I'll get to see lots of different endings to the story. That's the reason I run these things :-)

I'm still massively overcommitted with work, but no longer hopelessly so - yesterday made a world of difference, and I'm slowly climbing on top of things. I have plans to try some more layout tricks with the Silent Streets character sheets (more practice!), and then I can get back to painting things for my first Ebay attempt. I'm really not sure how the auction will go, but I want to see what the waters are like... I'll be selling some models that I bought for about 30% of retail value, so at worst I'm unlikely to lose anything.

Phew! After a four-night crash course in the new software (I crashed into it, and eventually crashed right through) the first issue of Insurgent is finished. It's a 15-page, 1.4MB PDF available from the Downloads page at http://www.wargamerau.com - have a look, and tell me what you think :)

Note that you'll need to be logged in to download files. Registration is free, and only takes a moment - a larger member base also helps us to attract sponsors to the site, which Stan currently pays for out of his own pocket. If you're at all interested in gaming, painting, or wacky electronics projects, I think you'll like this issue.

The main focus of the 'zine is Warhammer 40k, but we seem to have a horde of model-building projects this time around. Steve has wired up fibre-optics, LEDs and electroluminescent wire to the eyes and weapons of a whole army of 28mm Necron models... Stu has built a spaceport terrain piece out of an old VCR and a flashing circuit for the lights. In less-technical matters, I convert some fantasy Ogres into a sci-fi equivalent. Anton also writes an article about preparing for a tournament, aimed at people new to the scene.

Also: does anyone know of a reasonably-priced printing place? I'd like to print out a colour "Store Copy" for the noticeboard in each GW store, but I'll be doing it out of my own pocket. Eight copies runs to 120 colour pages, which is way out of my price range at the local printing centre.
