I think I survived the last fortnight. I'm not entirely sure, though - gazing back with that 20:20 hindsight, I start to wonder...

Two weeks ago, the final ][con ran - a 40k tournament for 60 players. As soon as it wrapped up, I started working on a table of terrain for the Arcanacon tournament, the Snow and Thunder game (tabletop, Weapons of the Gods), and the Maiden of Gears (freeform, Iron Kingdoms). I also moonlighted as a painting judge for the Arcanacon 40k tournament, which attracted a mere 109 players...

Snow and Thunder seemed to go well, although I felt like I took a while to warm up to it on Friday. My favourite session was the final one, where I didn't try to force any additional plot material on the group - they finished what they came to do and went home, not realising that a major enemy (the evil Hell Clan, led by Metal Lord) had not appeared in the story at all ;)

The Maiden of Gears was the first freeform I've written, and I can think of at least a dozen things I'd change if I ran it again. The original plan to have an A5 sheet for everyone, with a map on one side and a brief glossary (city and country names, etc) on the reverse would have been great - sadly, I completely forgot in the leadup to the con. The thirty character sheets ended up longer than my thesis...

The freeform room was too small for thirty players, and it was a bit crowded. Nonetheless, many devious plots were hatched. A troupe of inventors fled by airship to Ord; Lael was crushed between the invading Khadorans and the Cygnaran defence. The plans to built a flying citadel were taken by the Cygnaran military, and the very nature of war changed forever.  I had fun running it, and it was interesting to see what the players ended up doing - I didn't see any of the developments coming, but they were all characterful.

I won a painting award for the Imperial Front game, too - I didn't play, but I painted Kane's armoured company (1800 hand-painted rivets, anyone?). I'm still editing the 200+ photos I took on Sunday morning - we'll be creating a gallery on http://www.wargamerau.com in the next week.

After all that, I need to unwind a little :) Dream are hosting Traum:Fabrik this Friday night - it's an Industrial night, with performance artists and a band from Sydney playing live. If you want to come along, feel free to drop by my place beforehand - we live just up the road from the club. Hope to see a few of you there - apparently, Psychonaut has joined Abyss in the line of Clubs That Did Not Survive 2004, so we're running out of clubs to go to...
