Get me outta here!
Jul. 22nd, 2005 02:32 pmI finally organised some holidays, so I'll be away from work next week. Technically, I've decided to take my holidays from today - however, I'm still at work fixing a few things up before I leave. I have almost two months of leave available at the moment, so I think I can afford to take six days off... I plan to spend my week writing and painting, and cleaning up some of the mess I've been too busy to deal with at home. I want to take a chunk out of the commission and eBay painting that's on my desk. It will clear some space, but more importantly it should generate some money. Every spare dollar is currently being viewed as something to pay next year's rent if I go back to study.
Last night I went to a talk on Schlieren and Shadowgraph photography - using a system of parabolic mirrors and a razor blade to see otherwise invisible distortions in density and refractive index. It allows photographs to be taken of everything from the shockwave of a bullet passing through the air, to turbulent air currents caused by body heat. I'll write a proper post about it later (I need to practice my writing...) - for now, my brain is still reeling from the thought of taking high speed shots at ten million frames per second.
I had dinner with a bunch of people who have all done postgrad science, worked in a lab for a few years, and taken a step sideways into communications. It's a funny old world...
In other news: VNV Nation tickets (Melbourne concert: September 3rd, HiFi Bar) are now on sale. Tickets are $53.50 online (including a booking fee), or $50 from Peril or Heartland Records. I've already bought two tickets... if you're planning to come, let me know :)
