A dilemma

So. Tool are playing a Melbourne show on Jan 31st, at the Myer Music Bowl. Last time I saw them live was after the release of Lateralus, and I'd really like to see them again.

The best part of the last Melbourne show was the atmosphere out in the crowd, where I spent most of my time as close to the stage as I could survive... The Music Bowl is a strange venue, though - fixed seating up front, with the hill extending way back from the stage. It's back to front from what I'm used to, as the "General Admission" area ought to be right up front.

Gold tickets are for the seating area; Silver tickets are for the grass. The seats will get in the way, but it guarantees getting nice and close. The price is close enough to be negligible.

Who's seen bands in the Music Bowl before? Can anyone recommend one option over the other?

I'll be waiting outside the Ticketmaster office when tickets go on sale at 9am this Friday... I'm just not sure which to get, if they have both available.

I'll be staying up Thursday night to buy mine online. What are the bets that the tickets are gone in an hour.

I had to fight with Nat, Benno and Nikkicat who wanted to be right up the front for Earthcore in the Park and Infected Mushroom, but in the end they agreed I was right.

The best seats are either the back row of seating (so you can get up and dance) or right up the front of the grass. Its the right height, the acoustics are such that that is the best place sound wise, and you have the sky overhead, the crowd all around you and the music washing over you. Also if you want to dance and bounce - that will be the best place. Security tends to like to keep the front and aisles clear.

No money on that one :) Hour and a half maximum, I'd say...

Cool - thanks for that :)

I think I'll aim for the Silver (grass) ticket, and force my way as close to the front as I can get.

Much as I'd like to get closer to the stage, spending a concert squashed in by seating isn't much fun...

Of course this is just my opinion :) But you can also gauge the crowd and security on the night, if a mosh pit forms closer to the stage it might be possible to get down there. But i like the sky above me and the best acoustics.

I'm not sure how much space there is in front of the seating area, but I think I'll take my chances on the hill. I really felt for the poor buggers in the seating areas at the last Melbourne and Sydney shows - they really wanted to move, but couldn't.

Plus, as you say, the acoustics are designed so there's a large sweet spot in the middle of the amphitheatre... I'd rather be surrounded by sound (and people) instead of furniture...
