I went to the third Little Wars event on Sunday, and had a great time. After finding out about Larb's death the previous night, I wasn't entirely sure if I'd make it out of the house on Sunday morning. I'm glad that I did, though.

Little Wars is an annual one-day wargaming event, bringing together clubs, stalls, painters and sculptors from around the country. It's held at Club Tivoli on Dandenong Road: sharing the space with the German Club. As a happy side effect there's a restaurant (good German food, but terribly slow service) and a licensed bar. A pint of DAB with some friends goes a long way to lifting my mood.

Little Wars is also home to a painting competition run by the local OzPainters crew. Despite my late arrival, I managed to get an entry in just before they started judging. They made the final cut but didn't place, which was nice - same result as last year, when I entered another figure from the same army. I didn't paint them with a competition in mind, so it's nice to know that my gaming figures are at a decent standard when compared with the rest of the entries. Next year, I'd like to work on some entries aimed specifically at the competition. You can see the full results (including photos of almost all entries) here.

These are the figures I entered: Remotes from the Nomad army, from the game Infinity. They are some of the most complicated metal figures I've ever assembled (even the Tsyklon's ammo feed is a separate piece, needing to be glued in two places), but I think they're worth the effort. For an idea of the scale, the bases are 40mm across.

I'm not feeling so good today. Probably a combination of feeling unable to make a dint in what I'm writing for work, and post-Arc stress from the Warmachine tournament I ran.

As a whole, Arcanacon went really well - possibly as it's the first convention in several years that [livejournal.com profile] aeliel and I actually got to play more than one or two games, and neither of us were ConOrgs. It makes a huge difference. Standout game for me was [livejournal.com profile] pastryproducts' time-travelling tabletop, Vicis Fenestra. In fact, we were enjoying the characters and setting so much that we almost didn't make it out of the Scientist's house, where the game began - I could happily have played that game with the same characters and players for more than one session.

I'm feeling thoroughly burned out from running or judging miniatures tournaments. I still really enjoy painting, and would like to actually play some more games this year (probably at Battle Bunker). I'm even happy to do most of the organisation needed to get Skirmish Sundays into a regular event, as I really want to play some more games with low model counts: Infinity, Alkemy, Malifaux.

However, I'm sick of dealing with tournament players. Having people haggle over scores and rules is just not something I enjoy doing. The majority of tournament-goers are great, but it's always the minority that I remember after an event.

Arc40k has now hit 200 players - beating our previous record for the largest in the country by more than 50 players. I'll do what I can to help out in the lead up to next year's event, but I would rather not be a judge again. I don't feel like I've been part of something awesome. I just feel like I've lost a chunk of my long weekend.

Warmachine is still my preferred game, but I will look into getting another person (or a games club) to take over the tournament at Arcanacon. I've run most of the events in Melbourne since the game launched in 2003, and (together with [livejournal.com profile] aeliel) have run the biggest events in the country. There are plenty of people playing the game now, and I would like a break.

A new resolution for the "stuff to do" list...

Never attempt to help run/set up four or more games at a con, until I develop some kind of self-preservation instinct. Instead of the easier approach of letting the games go to hell while I clung to sanity (or slept in) I followed the fine example set by so many others, and smiled as I plowed myself into the ground :)

Nonetheless, I had a great time. Ran the first War Machine tournament in the state, on Friday - not many players, but many interested people amongst the other miniature gamers, who may start to join in soon. All good fun - and to make up for odd player numbers, I got to play five games in the two Friday sessions - while handling scoring for all the games.
End result - brains sucked out of left nostril, sleep deprived from pre-con runaround, grinning like a loon.

Saturday and Sunday were filled with 40k, as one of a hundred and six players. I thought I had a lot of registrations at Intensicon, with 90 for my game... this crowd was enormous. I think I left my remaining sanity at the con on Saturday, as I went home and sculpted a 10mm nurgling-of-mass-destruction to use as a special objective on Sunday morning, painting it as the sculpt cured at 3am...
End result - sanity shredded, subject to flashback-paranoia at the sound of dice. I finished 22nd again - the same as almost every year. You know, if they didn't keep adding another 25 players each con, I'd have won it by now...

Monday morning saw me run a session for Jye, on five minute's warning and no breakfast. Many (dastardly) pirates were vanquished, many (heroic) pirates triumphed, many swashes were buckled. The final two sessions were filled with creepy paranoia co-GMing with [livejournal.com profile] miss_rynn, and I met some particularly cool first-time con goers. One of them even plans to run an Exalted game, which I'll be playing in at some stage...
End result - flashback-paranoia induced by the Silent Hill soundtrack (curse you Rynn!), and still grinning like a loon.

The post-con food'n'drinks'n'weary conversation was great - as a result, I went to bed some time after 6:30 this morning, and have just set foot in my room again. Brain.... freeezing... up...

...sleep caaaaaalllls....
