North Melbourne might seem like it's full of smoke, but it's actually comparatively clear compared to East Burwood. I suspect that's true for most of the eastern fringe, being so much closer to the fire fronts.

When I left work tonight, thick clouds of smoke were drifting across the road. Grey-brown haze slowly wandered across the tram tracks, and occasionally the air cleared enough to see off into the distance. Not sure what happened to the tram, but I waited on the Burwood Highway for about forty minutes in the middle of a growing crowd of grumpy people who wanted to get home...

I spent today making about 170 pages of changes to the memoirs (mostly things that should have been queried in the early editing stages, like spellings of family names etc). Tomorrow I'll scan some new photos and add another insert page, and finalise the index. The book should be done by lunchtime, as it's the end-of-year printing deadline... I'm not convinced that it will reach the printers before having another round of changes made to it, though.

Ideally I'd like to send the book off at lunchtime, head home, and get to work on the other million projects that are running at the moment. Particularly pressing are any jobs that I'm actually getting paid for, as those are looking thin on the ground after this month. Luckily, I also have my "in case of emergency, file last year's tax" option... I should be owed a bit of money, so I just need to brave the ATO website for long enough to claim it.

Then I just have to start hassling people about paying me for work that I've done over the last year. If you're reading this and you haven't paid an invoice, I'm lookin' at you...
