The weekend that was...
Apr. 25th, 2004 10:54 pm"Over the years, a huge number of theological man-hours have been spent debating the famous question:
How many angels can dance onthe head of a pin?
Then again, you might just as well ask how many demons can dance on the head of a pin. They're of the same original stock, after all. And at least they can dance.*
And if you put it that way, the answer is, quite a lot actually, providing they abandon their physical bodies, which is a picnic for a demon. Demons aren't bound by physics. If you take the long view, the unicerse is just something small and round, like those water-filled balls which produce a miniature snowstorm when you shake them. But if you look from really close-up, the only problem about dancing on the head of a pin is all those big gaps between electrons.
*Although, it's not what you and I would call dancing. Not good dancing, anyway. A demon moves like the British group in the Eurovision Song Contest."

Checking my pulse, it appears that a) I have survived the week and weekend, and b) I have very cold fingers. I'm also typing a lot slower than normal.
Psychonaut was good, although putting the loud hard stuff on at the beginning of the night was an interesting move. If they are trying to get more people in early, they could rearrange the DJ list a bit - it's tricky coming straight in from the cold, and trying to dance that fast without warming up ;-) A lot of unfamiliar faces, too. Nice friendly crowd for the most part, though - more people came up and chatted (even while on a dancefloor) than they have in ages. 'twas all good.
The Covenant show was great. The songs were very slick and polished, and they used the setlist to good effect, controlling the atmosphere well. Lots of pretty lighting effects, captured by a great many digital cameras and phones in the audience - although I found it amusing that phones were taking better images than the cameras. The number of people who insisted on standing still on the dancefloor was a bit strange, and more than a few were shooting evil looks at those who actually danced. I have plans for the next concert, involving smuggling an electric cattleprod into the crowd...
Three encores were a surprise - I think most people figured that two encores were pretty damn good, and they were starting to drift away when the band came back out again for one more. Highlights? Eskil's expert handling of the crowd; Clas's mad leaping about whenever he didn't need to be at his keyboard; Joakim's determination to prove that vocoder-screams are just as important as keyboard; Speed & Call The Ships To Port. And to the girl who was dancing next to me: You rock. There weren't nearly enough people dancing at that show.

And yes, I'm running off to buy Northern Light as soon as I get the chance :-)
