'eavy metal
Aug. 30th, 2005 01:11 pmAmong other things, I painted on the weekend. Karchev is a model from Warmachine, and seems to embody Privateer Press' "Full Metal Fantasy" tagline. He's the disembodied torso of a sorceror who refused to let death get in the way of serving the Motherland... 23 metal pieces, most of which are heavy enough to need pinning to reinforce the joints - it's certainly not a simple model to assemble. After I started work I realised that my old Khadoran colour scheme just wasn't cutting it any more, so I repainted the other three pieces to match him. Not bad, for two nights of work :)
Vallejo Game Colour paint schemes (mainly for my reference, but also for the other painters out there)
Gold: worked up through Brassy Brass, Glorious Gold, Polished Gold, and a gold/silver mix on the highlights. Shaded with a wash of Chestnut Ink and some thinned black paint. I've avoided painting gold for a couple of years, but I decided to finally take the plunge with my new paints.
Silver: Brassy Brass and GW Boltgun Metal, blended up to Chainmail. Toned down with a thin black wash to take the shine off it.
Red: Scar Red (darkest red in the range) mixed with Black. Colour gradient from 2 Red : 1 Black all the way up to 8:1, and then final highlights with pure red. Scar Red is really nice to work with. I think it works better as a highlight than a shading colour, although it's usually only used to provide shadows.
Flesh: Can't remember the exact mix. Dwarf Flesh (pinkish skintone), white, bone, and probably a small drop of blue. I added white for the highlight, to keep the translucent appearance.
I'm still having some camera problems, but I managed to doctor a couple of images on the computer until I could see things clearly. The bases have since been finished, and the flock isn't shiny any more (it looks a bit artificial in these shots).
Karchev: The Man In The Machine

Karchev and two heavy Warjacks (didn't get a picture of the Destroyer and its Bombard cannon)
