Blast Doors Down
Nov. 2nd, 2010 12:03 pmWe live across the road from Stable Drive, at the Flemington Racecourse.
It's a nice spot. There are walking paths lined with peppercorn trees, and the river is a few minutes' walk from our door. Most of the year it's fairly quiet - we're on a busy road, but the house is fairly soundproof. The worst time tends to be during the Big Day Out, when the street (and our balcony) get covered in broken glass from all the empty beer bottles people discard on their way in or out of the venue.
Today is Cup Day, which means that the intersection outside my window is full of people. Four police are directing traffic. Five lanes of taxis and limousines are trying to get in and out of the racecourse gates, while another six lanes of traffic attempt to drive past.
It's wet and miserable out there. All told, it's a perfect day for staying inside and getting some work done, while bedraggled cup-goers run past the windows in a vain attempt to keep their hats or suits dry. I think the real winners this spring are Melbourne's dry cleaners...
