Some of you have seen my unending games of find-the-supervisor over the last few months... typically, I track him down for about ten seconds before he runs off somewhere. When I saw him on Friday and he wanted a chat, I knew something was up.
Turns out that the department has the same opinion of me, that I have of myself: I am not doing enough work, and have not done enough so far. Sure, I've been busy - I just never manage to do anything that's really important about this project. It's something I'm not happy with, and now it's attracting the attention of other people - and directly impacting my marks, as Friday's chat revealed.
So, this is me giving my notice... I have to draw a line in the sand, starting tomorrow. After seven years of cutting slack for other people in their final year of study, this one is mine - and I think I have the right to put what time I have into managing my own life for a change. If you don't have much to do with me anyway, this won't affect you at all - but for those involved in things that I'm doing, you might want to read behind this cut.
Note: This isn't all aimed at people who read LJ. I'm writing it here so I can remember what I need to do.
Unicon: By the end of next week, the booklets, full listing of games, timetable, and entry forms will be finished and printed. This is where I quietly slide away - I've done all I have time to do.
War Machine: My final demo games for the year will be held next Sunday (11/7) at DWARFCon. After that (in time for the release of WM: Escalation), Brett will be taking over.
Tai Chi: I can't guarantee that I'll be training regularly enough to pretend that I'm a committee. I will try to make as many classes as possible, but the end of last semester will not happen again. I have spent long enough organising things while my own life is left behind.
Games: I'm out-of-bounds for people starting new games. Please don't try to talk me into playing anything - I'll probably try to say yes, but I won't have the time. As each current game finishes, I'm out. Currently playing three games per fortnight; this will drop in a couple of months.
Work#1: Maximum of one day per week, unless I can work from home (saving two hours of travel). As I move into more technical writing, and less labwork, I will push for off-site work that I can fit in around lab-time at uni. I can't drop below one day a week, as that pays my rent.
Painting and sculpting (Work#2): Anything current that can be postphoned will be. Nothing new taken on until the end of the year. I have stupid amounts of work in this job (try 13 forgeworld resin kits for starters), and I will be glad to see it gone. I can't cancel jobs, however, as painting is paying for my food each week.
So, that's
morsla, pared a little thinner. It's high time I took my own advice for a change - and that change starts now...

Date: 2004-07-04 09:51 am (UTC)Good lord, where do you get the money?
And will you get the scorpion super-heavy? It's VERY pretty.

Date: 2004-07-04 10:19 am (UTC)Everyone's too worried about carcinogenic dust / damaging their own models to assemble anything themselves, so I'm assembling (and painting, in some cases) a whole pile of other people's models. Three nurgle dreads for Mark, a company of Vanquishers for Kane... it all adds up.
Fortunately, it pays some bills. And I should have a few years left before the dust kills me.
I'm seriously considering the Scorpion once I can work full-time... At the moment, the only bits of resin that I actually own are two Wave Serpents - which I decided to save for, after seeing yours up close at Arc.

Date: 2004-07-05 02:08 am (UTC)Yeah the Serpents have been serving me well. The design is such that they're tougher than either the Falcon or Prism, they travel well. Haven't had any transport breaks yet.
I covet that Scorpion. Ever since a mate got his Baneblade, I've been thinking... 'I really need something that will have a good crack at it...' There's only so many haywire-equipped storm squads and brightlances I can fire at it!
