This just appeared when I tried to check my details in the HR system...

In other news, the Iron Kingdoms book arrived! For $10 less than the Australian retail price, I recieved my copy a week before release, and signed by the two developers... :-)
Lots of very cool Steampunk material in there, and a great background setting. I'm not a fan of the D20 system (
miss_rynn's game excepted...) but there is a heap of information that doesn't need any sort of rules to cover it. Big chapters on things like the religions & deities of the setting, steam/sorcery mechanical hybrids, and the political landscape of the Iron Kingdoms - plus plenty of illustrations, as both the lead designers are artists.
As D20 rules go, there are adaptions of many existing classes for a more "civilised" setting - most of Immoren is settling in to an Industrial Revolution, which changes the roles of many class types. Arcane sorcery is treated with suspicion, although there are respected arcane societies that many join. Divine sorcery is a little different, in regards to healing and resurrection - the nature of death and the afterlife in the IK setting places many limitations (in game mechanics, and morals) on the use of these powers. There are detailed sections on creating Mechanikal artifacts, and a new take on Necromantic magic.
Plus, the book contains all the new classes and prestige classes leaked in the lead-up to the game's release - the orders of Gunmages, Mage-hunters, arcane mechanics, bodgers, etc.
I particularly like all the story hooks scattered through the book, in little text boxes - the game has been written over the last few years, and that huge wealth of background detail from playtests is showing. The book is clearly set out, and they haven't skimped on space - rather than cramp it all on the page, the book is 390 pages long...
I have a feeling that the only way I'll get any work done on my thesis is by leaving the book at someone else's house for a week or two. Otherwise, I'll end up reading it 'til 6am, and sleeping through my lab bookings...

Date: 2004-08-18 01:19 am (UTC)I'm so jealous... I picked it up in Mind Games the other day and almost bought it then and there...it's so beautiful. Why must this setting be d20? I know I won't find anyone else to play with, and in any case the d20 rules will just make me angry if I do...

Hmmm...I have a new house which would love to look after it for you. I'm sure we've met. You can trust me with it. Honestly.

Date: 2004-08-18 03:53 am (UTC)Well, I didn't actually get as far as twisting it. Or even threatening to, as it turned out. Almost as though he wanted to borrow it all along...
It's a damn good book - well worth getting, even if you ignore the D20 rules (like I have).
