Fog

When I woke up this morning, all the backdrop painters were still in bed. Heading in to the station, the world only existed for a few metres in any direction. Out beyond that, it faded into white - no buildings went up more than two floors, and the park only had trees planted close to the road. I stared up at the featureless white sky, searching for the sun, and thought, "it's a hell of a job, painting all that every morning. You'd think they'd leave the world set up overnight..."

"This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
Before we all go under
And fade out again
and fade out again

Heh - I tend to think of it as the world being switched to the backup server. The backup has less grunt, so they put the fog in because it just can't render that much detail.

If the draw distance or frame-rate drops on the world, the game will be up...

...you know, that whole observation would have been much wittier in a world where the Matrix hadn't comprehensively beaten me to it.

Ah, guess I over slept...*winks* But, I mean, if they left the world up overnight the rain would bleach all the colors and they'd run and it would be a mess.

Hmmm... maybe they just roll up the colours in the sky overnight, when it's too dark for anyone to see them? I mean, the northern hemisphere has to get its sky from somewhere...

Colours tend to make life much more alive, somehow. I liked your story, btw :)

Hmmm...that makes sense. And thanks.
