Me an' Inevitability sat down and had a chat today. I've spent the past few weeks deciding not to get any older this year, when the thought crossed my mind - mind you, that hasn't been often, due to stupidly large piles of work. I thought I'd get away with it, too - up until this afternoon, when it became obvious (well, Inevitable) that time would keep on flowing regardless of how busy I was.

Don't misunderstand - I like being busy, and I can actually see where I'm going with this project. It's just that, well, I could do with a few more hours in the day while I work on my eight-places-at-once stance. And a birthday takes some amount of time - the main commodity I'm missing this year.

On Sunday, I'm a quarter-century old. That's no ordinary blink-and-it's-gone birthday - it's about as subtle as a landslide, and bound to do some damage as it roars past. Hell, in some parts of the world that's damn near decrepit :-)

I paused to think about encroaching oldness - stretching my rheumy limbs by dangling upside down in the Carlton Gardens playground. Hanging from my ankles, the blood rushed to my head and I re-remembered decisions made long ago - getting older is fine; growing up is fine. Passing that mysterious point-of-no-return is right out of the equation, though. As long as I can climb trees and risk life and limb (mine, mainly) on play equipment, I should be okay.

It's either that, or I hunt the young ones to drain them of their youth and vitality - but I think the Dark Crystal covered that years ago...

In other news, I've missed both Liu He and Tai Chi for five weeks running, now. All sorts of different reasons each time, but I still feel slack because of it - and I haven't stretched properly in aaages. If anyone can teach me some more lower-back stretches (I've mainly worked on leg flexibility from Wushu), I'll credit you in my thesis... I'm sick of creaking when I get up to walk around the honours room ;-)

Dark Crystal reference! Whoo!

Awww, poor old man you. It's bad, from Monday on, you'll be closer to 30 than to 20, and we all know once you're almost 30, all your fun stops. Hanging around playgrounds (even upside down) becomes a risky business, serious things like work, bills and "The Future"(patent pending) encroach on sunrise walks, letters in the sand and the highest tree on the mountain.
But then again, if you just get up on your birthday and repeat three times "I don't believe in aging", then your birthday will simply pack up and hide, leaving you to your usual roughly-something-or-maybe-not-or-yes-I-don't-know age. Which is really the only state to be.

Psychonaut is indeed on.

I won't be going, though (no going out for a while... thesis looming, and I can't afford to write off a whole day to recover).

I'll be heading to the Clyde for a few drinks by about 5pm, though - come along, if you're free. We'll be in the corner bar, most likely.

Hey - I'm terribly sorry we forgot your b'day party - I am super forgetful, wheras Becka had an honest to goodness misconception.

Hope you had fun, and happy birthday - we'll make it up to you on some (sadly) less portentious occaision.
