A healthy dose of randomness
Aug. 17th, 2006 01:06 pmI admit it. Despite protesting about getting up at the crack of waytooearly o'clock, I'm really enjoying the morning Tai Chi classes this semester.
It's not just for the chance to stretch my limbs, although that's a welcome distraction. It's not just for the chance to stretch my brain, learning new movements and refining old ones. The thing that's really made this semester feel different is the hour after class, where I've been able to sit around talking to people about entirely random things.
I've missed it. Whether I'm writing, painting, sculpting or laying out books, virtually every "job" I have involves long hours spent completely on my own. I quite like the chance to focus on things for hours on end, but I've really missed the bits of randomness that happen when you bring a bunch of other people into the mix. I don't make an especially good hermit, because I get cravings for conversations...
Blue Zone cafe may be getting an unhealthy amount of money from the number of drinks I buy over the semester, but it's a nice (second) start to the day. When the conversation can cover Moog synthesisers, brain chemistry, biographies and telecommunications infrastructure before you've even had breakfast, something is right with the world.
