[livejournal.com profile] aeliel, [livejournal.com profile] fetnas and I are off to see the circus tonight :-) Next, I might run off to join one.

Last night, we headed out to the Clyde for [livejournal.com profile] mistresscarlett's farewell... she's off to Oxford to find their academics and eat their brains. Or something like that. Had good (although all too brief) conversations with huge numbers of people I don't see often enough any more, and then I headed home in search of more plague-banishing drugs. I figured it was better to bail early, than to infect everyone with an extra dose of the 'flu.

I bumped into some Wushu people on the way home - the training trip to China left early this morning, so I saw them just before they went home to finish packing. I still want to go back (there's a mountain next to Shaolin that I wasn't allowed to freeclimb to the summit of...), but I need to get a bit healthier first. I have a three-week break from training, which I can use to consolidate what I've learned. The China crew will be in better shape when they get back to Melbourne, but they'll be a little bewildered from the vast amount of new material they learn over there - this is my best chance to build on the style we've been learning over the last few months.

Bethany called me on my birthday, just before leaving Edinburgh. She's off for another month in Europe, back to find work in Scotland, and then spending the rest of the year in North America... hopefully home in time for Christmas. She sounds well, although converting her remaining savings into British Pounds has made her bank account look a little sad. Apparently she might spend longer working in the Highlands, to make enough to get by in the US.

I have more graphics software to learn and models to paint in the event of my impending joblessness. Painting can pay my bills for a while, and I really need some time to get to grips with Photoshop. After that I have to brave Illustrator... hopefully, the toolbars and palettes will be more intuitive by then as they crop up in InDesign and Photoshop as well.

Lots to do, lots of options. While I may take nineteen different roads to wherever I'm going, it's the journey that matters most. I won't get there first or fastest, but I'll see more of my surroundings on the way...

Illustrator is evil. Don't be afraid of the in-program tutorials. They would probably have been really helpful if they'd given me time to do them.

I'm finding the tutorials to be really useful, actually - at least in Photoshop and InDesign. I haven't used Illustrator all that much though.

The online help and tutorials are pretty detailed... often, it takes longer to find out what a process is called than it does to learn how to do it :) I'm still trying to learn desktop-publishing-speak.

By the way... would you and [livejournal.com profile] aeliel be interested in playtesting my game? Sometime next week?

We're currently free Monday and Wednesday night, but have promised one of those two to Scott for his playtest... currently waiting to find out when that will be.

Next Sunday is [livejournal.com profile] aeliel's birthday - we'll be out of town all weekend. Actually, I think weekends have been eaten up until after the 9th of October. It's a little bit crazy.

As far as I know, the only nights we're free before the con are Mon & Wed of the next two weeks. If other playtesters are easier to wrangle (most likely!) we might just poke at you after the con, and persuade you to run it again. I can provide food :)

We'll work something out - I'll keep you posted.

'twas called "The Space Between" - I just dug up their blurb on a website.
To a mixture of Jacques Brel, industrial noise and eclectic post-classical music, three performers deconstruct their circus skills, their relationships and the space through which they move in search of freedom and understanding.

It was a really good show - just the three performers, black mats on the floor, and a trapeze off to one side. Most of the spaces were made by changing the lighting, using a projector to place images on the mat. In amongst the counterbalances and tumbling, there was a deeply fucked up love triangle being drawn out... visually fantastic, but so sad to watch...

I wouldn't have known that it was on if [livejournal.com profile] fetnas hadn't called me about it. I tend to go past the town hall too quickly to read their event board.
