Finally found a computer...

Well, I made it to Canberra. Land of cold winters, empty streets, and miserly @#^*'s who short change you...
Sorry - I should qualify that statement a little :) To be fair, several days of crystallography, X-ray flourescence and diffraction, SEM, electron microbrobe, data analyses, and clay/oxide mineralogy (and it's only day 3!) aren't doing wonders for my patience...
Cold: Pretty cold. Not below zero, though (that'll happen when I'm outdoors in Tasmania), but nice and chilly. I quite like this weather - at the moment, it's cold but mostly dry.
Empty: Sure, I got here on Sunday evening. But I've never seen a shopping strip completely deserted at 8pm on a weeknight before. I keep having to check that I haven't missed some kind of evacuation warning...
Miserly: I now count my money veery carefully. I've been short-changed by four people in four days, because I've taken the smiling look for honesty. There are several people in shops and taxis who are now richer for my trusting them...
I'll be back Saturday night, after covering more theory than I've done in both previous courses added together (and those were 9am-7pm, 7-day affairs...). My head hurts... but if I retain 10% of what I'm seeing, it's worth it...
