Morsla, Destroyer of Words
Feb. 18th, 2005 11:13 amThe morning trains are full of schoolkids, and all the uni students seem to be gearing up for a new year. After studying almost continuously for the last 19 years, I finally have no "classes" to go to, and I'm at a loose end...
The solution? Keep on learning things. My grammatical skills need some work, and I have two hours of public transport time each day - so, it's time to break out a book. Specifically, I'm working through a Gramar and Style textbook during my morning train trip. I'm amazed at how little I have been taught about the English language, and pleasantly surprised to discover how much I've picked up via osmosis. All those years as a bookworm must have been good for something after all.
My biggest painting commission to date is finally finished, as Kane picked up all the tanks last night. Soon, they'll be jet-setting off to Europe or North America, destined for some high-level tournament. *sniffs* Poor lil' tanks, all grown up and leaving home...
This provided a handy excuse to grab an MP3 player (I saw them on sale...) as a reward. I now have a 1GB player about the size of a AA battery, which will play me 50 hours of music between battery changes. I'm very impressed so far, although their instruction manual (6 pages on the device, 27 pages on the lyrics-synching software I'll never use) needs some work. Loading it up last night, I only fitted half the industrial/EBM playlist onto it - apparently, I'll have to make a few hard decisions about what to leave out.
In other news, I volunteered for proofreading and editing duty at work - strangely enough, I like editing other peoples' writing. It looks as though I might be able to do more of it in future. As the fourth reviewer, I thought the manuscript would be almost complete - instead, I made a little over a hundred corrections to it. I can now send it to the clients without having to cringe at the thought of them reading it, and that's a good feeling.
I think I'm becoming an Unwriter, as I keep whittling these documents down to compact, efficient sentences. I have faced the seven-part run-on sentence and I know no fear, for my new title shall be Destroyer of Words...
